Wikis

I must say, I’m really glad we’re conducting the class utilizing wikis as we are. My experience with wikis prior to this session has been looking up dubiously accurate information about areas of interest. I tend to use wikipedia when I’m learning something new and need some supplemental information, or if there’s something I’m vaguely interested in. I never trust the validity of what I’m reading though, so I’ve never given them much thought as an educational tool. I did a quick google search, and found this pretty interesting website, there’s a lot here and it’s neat to see how others are using the tool.

Seeing the way the wiki is used in class makes me realize how much potential there is. The relative ease with which we’re able to share information and collaborate is outstanding. I would think that wikis would even be a low cost solution for a virtual team working collaboratively on a project. There’s so much to be said for individuals being able to collaborate on content regardless of where they are in the world.
I think I might test drive using wikis with one of my subject matter experts. She’s pretty technologically inclined, and I expect she’ll enjoy the unique approach to collaboration that a wiki can provide us. I’ll keep you posted . . .

. . . and away we go.

So this is where it starts. I begin my first guided foray into the world of web 2.0 with a little bit of trepidation. I’m an introvert by nature, and as such part of what I like about the internet is that I don’t have to interact with people. Web 2.0 changes that prospect and while it might be outside of my general realm of comfort, that’s not a bad thing at all.
I’m extremely interested in the potential uses for web 2.0 tools in an e-learning environment. I work with e-learning design and development, and as such, I’m always looking for new and interesting ways to keep online learning moving forward in a productive and interesting way. I’m already intrigued with the possibilities that I’ve seen thus far, and I can’t wait to see where we go from here.
